Identifying Marginal Lands in Europe and strengthening their contribution potentialities in a CO2 sequestration strategy

Exploring the sustainability potential of marginal lands

Marginal land (ML) has little or no agricultural or industrial value. Experts believe, however, that such lands could constitute suitable carbon sinks via afforestation/reforestation projects. The EU-funded MAIL project aims to trigger the utilisation of MLs as carbon sinks by fostering activities related to forestry and agriculture.

The project aims to detect and classify mountainous and semi-mountainous MLs in order to deliver a web-based regional platform containing data, methodology and applications that can prove valuable to experts and policy makers. MAIL is a multidisciplinary consortium comprising six experienced partners whose collaboration will lead to new skills and knowledge concerning sustainable ML management.
